Diakonia

Strengthening, equipping and encouraging the Homewood Community with Hope through God’s love

Mission

Diakonia exists to strengthen, equip and encourage the Homewood community with hope through providing human services, youth ministry, counseling and education as a tangible expression of God’s love.

Programs

  • Summer Youth Program (SYP) is an outreach ministry, dedicated to the strengthening of the greater community by providing to the school-age children of Homewood an opportunity to develop morally, physically and spiritually in a safe and caring environment. The program also supports the school year’s academics through activities in science, math and reading. Its goal is to reduce delinquency-related risks through character building with faith-based activities and games, sports activities and field trips to cultural exhibits.
  • The Master’s Kitchen provides a nutritious lunch on Friday afternoons to those in need in our community. Our larger objective is to help end hunger in the Homewood community. Master’s Kitchen works with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to provide a Food Pantry for the Homewood Community as well.
  • Computer Lab is used by students for after-school programs.
  • The Pittsburgh Laymen’s Bible Institute (PLBI) and Counseling Program provides Biblical training for interested persons in the Homewood community and beyond. A goal of the ministry is to make the Bible accessible to all persons so they can apply its teachings in their daily lives, and by doing so experience greater spiritual, physical, emotional and economic health. The Counseling Program utilizes trained counselors to provide Marriage, Family, Premarital, Financial and Emotional Counseling.
  • The LAMP Program (Learning Assistance and Mentoring Partnerships) provides mentors for children attending the Faison Elementary School in Homewood. The program is a partnership between Diakonia Minstries and Family Guidance.
  • Girlfriends Together is a new ministry to meet the needs of women in Homewood so they can better fulfill their destiny through relationships and providing services that will minister to them mentally, physically and spiritually. The focus is on distressed women and single moms, helping to equip them to have hope and to be positive role models for their children and their community.
