After the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. many of the Jewish people were taken into Babylonia captivity.  After seventy long years in exile many of the captives returned to the city of Jerusalem.  The psalmist took this occasion to write Psalm 126 to praise God for delivering the refugees who had returned to the homeland and to pray for the deliverance of their fellow Jews who were still in captivity.
